3 yards of corded piping

Shirt fabric amount from size chart plus 1/4 yard

Instructions

1. Cut out all pieces of the Alex shirt from the pattern.

2. Cut out the center fabric panel using measurements from the chart below. The panel can be cut on the straight grain, cross grain or bias depending on your fabric and the look you desire.

3. Trim the seam allowance of the corded piping for the panel to ¼”. Place piping on the right side of one long edge of the panel lining up raw edges. Stitch in place. Repeat for the other side of the panel. Trim seam allowances to ¼”. Turn seam allowances to the wrong side so that piping is along the edges. Press well.

4. Mark the center of the Alex shirt front at the neck and lower hem. Mark the center of the piped panel with a line from top to bottom.

5.  Place the center panel (right side up) onto the shirt front (right side up) lining up the lower edges and the center marks. Pin or glue the piped panel in place. The panel will extend past the neck of the shirt at the top. Stitch the panel to the shirt by stitching-in-the-ditch in the piping seamline. Repeat for the other side.

6. Turn the shirt wrong side up and trim the panel at the top to match the neckline curve of the shirt.

7. Pull 3/8” of cording out from the piping at the neckline and trim. Flatten back out. Pull 1 ¼” of cording out from piping at lower hem and trim. Flatten hem back out. This reduces bulk at the neckband and hem.

8. Carefully trim the extra shirt fabric away from behind the center panel on both sides leaving a ¼” seam allowance. This reduces bulk at the neckband. Finish both panel seam allowances and press towards the center.

9.  Continue construction of the shirt according to the pattern instructions.

10. Embellish the piped panel with buttons or monogram after completion of construction.
