Supplies
5 ½” x 38” Pleated Insertion with 11 rows pleated*
Floss*
Black felt – 6" x 8"*
Carrot Button*
3” Styrofoam ball (this size exactly)
Hot glue gun & glue
*items included in one of our pre-made kits!
Instructions
1. Pleat 11 rows. If you have more rows than this, remove rows so that there are 11. Cut off any excess fabric beyond 38 inches. 2. Pull pleater threads out one pleat from each end on both sides. Tie off center 7 threads to 7 – 8 inches. Tie off 2 upper rows and 2 lower rows to 11 – 12 inches between knots. These rows are kept long to make construction easier in later steps.
3. Complete smocking design from first to last pleat.
4. When smocking is finished, remove all of the pleating threads except the top two and the bottom two.
5. Trim the fabric as close as possible to the top and bottom threads without cutting the thread.
6. Fold the insert with right sides together lining up smocking rows and the first and last pleats. Pin in place at each row. Stitch ends together between the first and second pleat of each edge (by hand or machine). Turn right side out and place ball inside. Distribute pleats evenly around the ball and pin fabric to the ball around the center line of smocking.
7. Find a cup or glass with a rim that has a 3” diameter. Sit the smocked ball on the glass so that both hands are free. Clip smocking thread knots and pull the corresponding thread ends together to cinch up the fabric to fit the ball. Tie threads into secure knots. Repeat with remaining pleater threads. Hide thread tails between pleats. A few pins can be used at the top of the ball to further secure fabric if needed. Drop a little craft glue along the top raw edges of the fabric.
Snowman Hat and Scarf
8. Cut out felt strip and circle using patterns.
9. Fold circle in half. Cut a 3/4" – 1” slit in center of circle. Refold so that cut is on the folded
edge. Cut another slit 3/4" – 1” long. Circle should now have an X cut in the center.
10. Mark felt strip at the halfway point, 1/4 point and 3/4 point along one long edge.
11. Place short ends of felt strip together, butting ends up to each other. Secure in place with clip
or clothespin. Using 3 strands of DMC stitch ends together.
12. Place felt strip on top of the felt circle at the center. Line up the seamline and marks on the
strip with the halfway points between the cut X ends.
13. Working with one mark at a time fold inside of hat up to pin pieces together. Tack hat top to the circle at the mark. Remove pin and move to next mark continuing until all 4 marks are tacked down to the circle.
14. Tie ribbon around hat top trim end of ribbon. Cut plaid ribbon into 4 strips that are 7” and 1 strip that is 8”.
15. Fold the 7” strips into figure-8s. Run a pin through the centers and secure in place for Frosty’s scarf. Reinforce with glue.
16. Place felt hat onto the top of the ball and secure in place with pins and glue. Cut a 2” square of black felt. Round off the corners. Place this circle down inside the hat to cover up the top of the ball. Glue in place.
17. Pin 8” strip into a circle and secure in place with a pin and glue.
